(en) Translation nowadays is a multi-faceted profession that covers many skills required and many different roles performed by participants of the translation market. Consequently, graduates must not only show a thorough understanding of the steps and procedures involved into producing translation, but be able to act in line with existing industry standards. Authentic (or simulated) translation projects are recommended in the translation literature as an efficient translator training tool. The article discusses some of the first results of an industry-oriented approach applied for training BA and MA students. A general idea of crowd translation environment and implementation of necessary technology at university courses is discussed. The objective of this study is to report the first-year results of a crowd translation performed by BA and MA students of Volodymyr Vynnychenko Central Ukrainian Pedagogical University in 2019 (March-May). The participants (38 BA and MA students) were engaged in crowd translation on a Crowdin – a cloud localization management platform for translation, managing and organization localization projects. The volume of work equaled 26000 words. The project started with pre-translation phase with a brief introduction on translation project management, project specifications, reference search and glossary review. The participants were provided with the requirements to avoid overediting and start from scratch if the quality of translation memory was too low. Each student was assigned 630-650 words to be translated and revised. Crowd translation approach on a specialized platform is beneficial for teachers since they can view and assess progress in real time and get detailed reports on students’ activity. Crowd translation is highly beneficial for students since it turns them into active members of translation community who can contribute to the common work not only as translators or editors, but as managers, terminologists, technicians etc. Crowd translation emphasizes the importance of a team-work and so-called “soft skills”: plan and manage time and efforts, use social media responsibly, comply with deadlines, instructions and specifications.
