Розвиток нових акцентних варіантів англійських слів у період 1958-1984 рр. (на матеріалі 11-го та 14-го видань everyman’s english pronouncing dictionary)

(uk) Статтю присвячено встановленню особливостей варіювання кодифікованих акцентних структур слів у нормативній британській вимові за період 1958-1984. Розглядається група слів, у яких протягом цього часу з’явилися нові варіанти акцентного оформлення. Встановлено акцентні типи та структури, що варіюють. Розглянуто такі супутні варіюванню акцентної структури чинники, як довжина слова у складах та частиномовна належність слів. Виявлено зміни у функціонуванні акцентних типів англійських слів у межах зазначеного діахронічного зрізу.

(en) The paper is concerned with the study of codified accentual structures variability in RP during 1958-1984. The group of words, which developed new accentual structure variants, are in the focus of investigation. Accentual types and structures that participate in this kind of variation have been singled out. Accentual types are viewed as schemes that indicate the kinds of stress within a word and accentual structures reflect the number of syllables and the placement of primary and secondary stresses on particular syllables in a word. Most of the words have developed two accentual structure variants. Only one out of 198 analyzed words has three alternative accentual structure variants. Five accentual types take part in variation during the above-mentioned period: ‘primary stress in a word’, ‘secondary+primary stress’, ‘primary+secondary stress’, ‘primary+secondary+primary stress’, ‘two primary stresses in a word’. The accentual type ‘two primary stresses’ in a word falls out of use. The dynamic processes in the word accentual structure involve such types as ‘primary stress in a word’, ‘secondary+primary stress’, ‘primary+secondary stress’. The main tendency is the change of ‘one primary stress in a word’ accentual type for ‘secondary+primary stress’ type. According to the ‘partof speech’ parameter, most of the words that have developed accentual structure variants are three-syllable and two-syllable nouns and adjectives. Further investigation of the issue under study can include establishing the peculiarities of the groups of words that have lost / retained the same number of their accentual structure variants during the period of 1958-1984.
